What are typical duties of a nanny?

A nanny is typically employed by the family to take care of their child or children in their family home. Typical duties are caring for the physical and emotional needs of the child and their holistic development. Nannies are also responsible for all nursery duties such as cooking, tidying up and children’s laundry.

Other typical duties:

  • Caring for all aspects of the child's development including physical, emotional and language skills

  • Planning games and activities

  • Planning and preparing well-balanced and nutritious meals and snacks

  • Communicating with parents on all aspects of the care of the child and following their instructions

  • School/nursery drop off and pick up and taking children to after-school activities

  • Arranging play dates and outings with the parents’ consent

  • Teaching basic social skills, good manners and hygiene

  • Creating a safe and stimulating environment

  • Reading with children and helping with homework

  • Cleaning and tidying up children’s bedrooms and play areas

  • Mending children’s clothes and toys

  • Obtaining receipts and providing fully detailed expenses after purchasing items for the kids

  • Being responsible for all equipment related to the care of the child, including the cleaning and maintenance of items such as sterilisers, buggies, car seats, etc.

  • Nannies often help with additional tasks for the family such as running errands, shopping, light housekeeping, cooking for the family, looking after pets, etc.
